She was getting ready to close the door, the window, turn off the lamp and sleep. Her friend named her Miss. Courage. She was medium height, brown eyes, dark brown hair. If you looked deeply, in her face was a kindness and passion that sometimes started to light. She always wore jeans. Of course she came from another city to study here, in London. Yet she was afraid of nothing, not a bit. She did all her work alone and was proud of her doing. She went to university, did shopping and cooked lunch or dinner; in one word, she was busy, not for one or two days but for all days. She was busy, so busy that even she couldn’t think about trivial matters. As she mentioned to her friends, “fear, anxiety and stress didn’t make sense to her. They were just words”. That night she was exhausted. Coming home with lots of things and a lot of things were borne for her to work with. Walking in the alley, she planned how to do that lot of things. First she made dinner, second did university work and third….. It seemed that her planning would never reach to an end. Enchanted by these thoughts, she suddenly found herself in front of house. That night was a special night. She was off on tomorrow and she wanted to take advantage of this chance. She prepared a very small snake for her dinner and started to work. She was so exhausted that while working, she felt to asleep. It was deep dark, some time after midnight perhaps, once she was awakened by a sound. It was a very tiny and low sound like those of footsteps. As if someone was walking slowly in search of something, stepped very quietly and his shoes made that sound. She was upstairs once she heard that sound. For the first time in her entire life, she felt frightened. Of course she had an experience of being scared to death, yet she recalled that event as an accident. It went back to two years ago; she was passing the street and busy thinking, somehow in her dreams and did not walk on the earth, so she didn’t realize that the light became green; cars started running while she was in the middle of the street, with a great sound of horn she saw where she was. She was frightened to the death. Remembering this, she talked to herself that the sound would be nothing more than a cat. Then she remembered her neighbor’s cat, Trinity. She said to herself that it might be that cat. Then she washed her face to reconcile and kept on working. Yet the sound became closer and louder. She stood up courageously and came down stairs calmly and quietly. Coming down each stair, she thought about how to face with the situation. She encouraged herself to have courage for turning on the light and finding the source of the sound. At first glance, she just got nothing but imagined if there was a strong man it would be better not to be bare hand, so she got a baseball stick. She heard some days before in the news that there was a murderer in their neighborhood who went to the house of single persons, stole their valuable thing, raped the women and at the end killed them in a very harsh and vigorous way. The murderer killed his victims by cutting their throat and then tore them into pieces. Her teeth were shattering and her body thrilling. She murmured with a low sound to give courage to herself. Before reaching the two final steps, she stopped, got ready for confronting with a man whose sound was in her ears. Quietly she put her feet on the first and then second stair, waiting for the man’s reaction. She came to the hall, turned on the light, saw nothing. Then keeping her breath and went to the kitchen and turned the light there too. Then bathroom and at final she checked the living room. She found nothing. She felt comfortable and thought that maybe everything was only in her mind not in reality. Maybe it was for being alone for a long time. Then she concluded that it might be nothing more than her imagination. Being busy with these possibilities, she sat down on the sofa and took a deep breath. Suddenly the volume of the sound increased. She was shocked, speechless and unable to react. She put her hand on her ears not to hear the sound, but this time it was clearer. It was fall and suddenly the weather became rainy and stormy. She felt that she was influenced by bad weather and everything was nothing except an imagination. Yet, still there was the sound and a shadow made apparent on the wall. She wanted to escape but the shadow became closer. She was going to shout, closing her eyes, deciding to run to up stair. At this moment, the shadow reached to the door; she shouted. Then there was another shout, too. She was frightened to death and not dared to open her eyes. Her heart was beating faster and faster; it seemed it was doing its last beating and then she fell on the floor. Next day she had an appointment with one of her friends; they planned to go out. Her friend waited a long time on her door and rang the bell for several times but she received no answer. So she decided to call the police. Then with the help of policemen the opened the door and saw the scene. Miss. Courage didn’t move a bit. Miss. Courage was dead. Surprisingly, they found a cat beside her. It was coming and going and making sound. It was Trinity; the policemen wanted to catch it but it ran towards the kitchen’s door to escape. The frightening sound was nothing except Trinity’s crawling. January 17, 2017 Read more
